Project Leader

Jusaku Minari, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Uehiro Research Division for iPS Cell Ethics, Center for iPS Cell Research and Application (CiRA), Kyoto University. His recent research focuses on ethical, legal and policy issues in emerging biomedical research, such as genome medicine, regenerative medicine, gene drives and public engagement.

Co-Project Leaders

Go Yoshizawa, Ph.D., is Research Fellow at the Work Research Institute (AFI), OsloMet - Oslo Metropolitan University. He has wide experience in interdisciplinary research covering technology assessment, foresight, ethical, legal and social aspects of emerging technologies, biomedical and research ethics, and responsible research and innovation.

Nariyoshi Shinomiya, M.D., Ph.D., is the Director of the National Defense Medical College (NDMC) Research Institute, and also Professor of the Department of Integrative Physiology and Bio-Nano Medicine at the NDMC. His specialties include microbiology & immunology, molecular oncology, diving medicine, and bioethics. His recent work on bioethics has focused on dual-use issues and education for life scientists.

Satoshi Kodama, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Ethics at Kyoto University Graduate School of Letters. His background is moral and political philosophy. His research interests include ethical theory (utilitarianism), moral methodology (the role of intuition in moral reasoning), ethics of genome editing, and public health ethics.

Daisuke Okazaki is a Lecturer at the Art Communication Research Center of Kyoto University of Art and Design. He is an expert in human resource development and workshop facilitation using artwork. He offers programs to firms, governments and other institutions to improve their skills of observation, thinking and communication for creation.

Core collaborative researchers

Megumi Kimura, Ph.D., is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Institute of Innovation Research, Hitotsubashi University. Her research is based on History and Media & Cultural Studies, and she now focuses on creative works and design processes bridging the knowledge gap between Science, Technology and the Arts. Beside her works as a researcher, she studies screen writing as well.

Aiko Hibino, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Japan’s Hirosaki University, where she teaches social psychology and social survey methods. She studies user-technology relations in emerging technology in life science fields.

Shishin Kawamoto, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Science, Hokkaido University. He is currently interested in dual-use issues of science and technologies. Through trans-disciplinary research, he is trying to bridge the gap between researchers, and between researchers and citizens.

Takuya Okamoto, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of the Division of Social Psychology at the Faculty of Arts, Shinshu University. His current research interests include human-place interaction, community and tourism, psychological effects of walking, and photo eliciting narrative approach (PEN-A).

Motoko Okumoto, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of the Department of Communication in Science and Technology Education and Research Program (CoSTEP), Hokkaido University. Her recent study focuses on informal learning in museology and science communication.

Keiichiro Tahara is the Co-Director of Science Communication Research Institute (SCRI) and a Senior Researcher at the Institute for Future Engineering. Adopting the soft systems approach to policy sciences, his transdisciplinary activities serve to enhance participation and evaluation in the knowledge-based society.

Riwako Hosaka, J.D., is a Project Coordinator & University Research Administrator (URA) for Tokyo University of the Arts (TUA). She has a wide variety of research and practical background including English Literature, Education, Law & Research Administration. Her career as a University Staff began at the University of Tokyo, and then moved to Kyoto University and Osaka University. Reina Saijo, Ph.D., is a Teaching Fellow at the Faculty of Letters, Kyoto University. Her research background is metaphsysics and aesthetics in analytic philosophy. She serves as an administrative assistant in the project whilst working on robot ethics and feminist philosophy.

Yuki Mieno is a Researcher at the Art Communication Research Center of Kyoto University of Art and Design. She joined the Art Communication Project through an undergraduate course at Kyoto University of Art and Design, and learned the method of visual thinking, which originated from the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in the US. She currently implements this method in various workshop activities.

Cooperative Artists and People

Keita Akiyama is a product designer with Fushigi Design, which he founded in 2017. He created the gene drive popup book and short movie of Sadogashima for the ISLE project.

Hiraku Wada is a website designer at mallet-DESIGN based in Nara. He is the primary contributor to the website design for the ISLE project (working with Jusaku Minari, Go Yoshizawa, Reina Saijo and Megumi Kimura).

Shiho Ueda is an artist whose style focuses on shades of colours; her iconic work is a series of paintings titled ‘What colors do’. She has provided the ISLE project with the website artwork.

Luis Patron is a movie producer at Patron Productions, specialised in documentaries and news. He has significantly contributed to creating the short movie of Teshima for the ISLE project.

Takehiro Morishima is the manager of teshimasite Inc., which supports a broad range of activities in Teshima island located in the Seto Inland Sea of Japan, Kagawa. He is one of the essential contributors in holding the workshop with residents in Teshima for the ISLE project.

Miwa Naito is the director of Aichi-based Office Matching Mole, which coordinates various activities of contemporary art. She has supported the ISLE project through her great efforts of organizing the workshop in Sakushima located in Mikawa Bay, Aichi.

Morito Yoshida is an artist and art director born and based in Sadogashima island, Niigata. He has organised the Sado Island Galaxy Art Festival every other year since 2016, and has supported the 2018 workshop of Sadogashima for the ISLE project.
