Not only scientific initiatives but also social and policy initiatives have key roles in balancing between the proper development of emerging biomedical technologies and the robust development of public trust. For this purpose, public engagement in this project addressed scientific, ethical, and social implications of these technologies, by designing, creating and applying a pop-up book in public workshops, where general citizens themselves could deliberate and discuss about the nature of the technologies and our future societies.

Taking ‘gene drives’ as an example of emerging biomedical technologies, this pop-up book facilitates reader deliberation and discussion about the following concepts:

Dual nature of biomedical technologies
(i.e. positive and negative societal implications);

Hidden and ambiguous relationships between emerging technologies, our daily life and future societies;

Interdependence between humans, non-humans (animals, artifacts) and the natural environment;

Informed decision- and policy-making on research and development of biomedical technologies
